Why Gel Polish Costs More Than Traditional Polish

Why Gel Polish Costs More Than Traditional Polish (And Why It Actually Makes No Sense)

If you’ve ever wondered why gel services are usually more expensive than traditional nail polish, you’re not alone. There is a reason… but it’s probably not the reason you think.

Because I’ve been in the nail industry since the dinosaurs (honestly feels like it some days), I can tell you exactly how this pricing difference started, AND why it stuck, even though it shouldn’t have.

The Origin Story: When Gel First Hit the Scene

When gel polish first launched, brands were pushing the “NEW!” “New technology!” “Better than polish!” angle. It was shiny, exciting and completely different from what clients were used to.

Nail techs suddenly had to invest in lamps, new products, new systems and training. It wasn’t just a new bottle of colour; it was an entire new way of doing nails.

So when the new fun thing arrived with a higher price tag? Clients didn’t blink. It made sense at the time.

The Pricing Strategy (AKA They Told Us To Charge More)

Here’s the part most clients never knew – when big brands ran their gel conversion classes, one of the messages was literally “charge more!”

So we did.

We added $10-ish to our traditional polish price to cover the cost of our investment in lamps, training and new products. And because every salon was doing it, the industry accepted it as normal. No one questioned it. Clients didn’t question it. It just became the standard.

And Then… It Never Changed

Even after lamps were paid off, even after gel became completely mainstream, even after traditional polish became the niche option- prices stayed the same. Gel remained “the premium service” simply because it always had been.

Technically, traditional polish was the base price and gel was the add-on. But over time, gel became the norm and traditional polish became the rarity… yet the pricing difference stayed frozen in time.

The Plot Twist: Traditional Polish Takes Longer

I charge the same for both gel and traditional polish, and clients are often surprised. They’ll book traditional polish because they’re “on a budget,” and then during the consult I’m like “Why? It’s the same price.”

Cue the blank stare.

A good traditional polish application can actually take longer – you’re waiting for layers to dry, managing smudges, watching humidity, coaching the client not to touch anything ever… it’s a whole situation.

Gel, meanwhile, cures instantly and lets you control the result far more predictably.

So the idea that gel should automatically cost more? It’s mostly historical, not logical.

So Why Does Gel Cost More Today?

Short answer: because it always has.

Long answer:

  • Early marketing positioned gel as a premium service
  • Techs were taught to charge higher prices
  • Clients accepted the higher price
  • The industry never reset

But in real-world salon life, the value difference isn’t as big as people think – and in many cases, gel is faster, more reliable and easier for both tech and client.

Final Thoughts

If you’re still pricing gel higher simply because “that’s what everyone does,” it might be time to reassess. The original logic behind gel pricing – covering lamps, conversion classes and the novelty factor – doesn’t really apply anymore.

As techs, we know gel is:

  • Faster to apply
  • More predictable
  • Less prone to smudging or environmental issues
  • Easier for clients to live with

Meanwhile, a high-quality traditional polish application can easily take longer and requires way more client management.

So if you’re looking at your service menu and wondering whether your prices still make sense, don’t be afraid to update them based on time, labour, and actual skill – not outdated industry habits from 15 years ago.

You don’t have to follow what the industry “has always done.” You get to build a pricing structure that reflects your expertise, your time, and the experience you provide. Use the history to inform your decisions, not restrict them.
